What is Computer Vision?

Computer vision syndrome is a type of eye strain caused by the chronic and repetitive use of digital devices. There are several reasons why computer vision syndrome develops:

  • People usually blink less when using digital devices.
  • Bright glare and high contrast can make it difficult to see clearly and can cause discomfort.
  • Most people also have to frequently refocus while looking at a screen, which can easily fatigue the eye muscles.

What Are the Signs of Computer Vision?

It's been estimated that as many as 50 to 90% of people who use computers experience symptoms of CVS at some point. These include:

  • Dry, itchy, red, sore, and irritated eyes
  • Eye fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Headaches
  • Neck and shoulder pain

Helpful Tips From Our Allentown Optometrist Staff

While CVS symptoms are temporary, repeated strain on the eyes can lead to things like fine lines, wrinkles, and decreased job productivity/satisfaction. Plus, repeated exposure to high energy blue light from digital devices may damage the retinas and increase your risk for certain eye conditions, including macular degeneration, cataracts, and general vision loss.  Our Allentown optometrist staff has several suggestions for protecting your eyes during your computer use:

  • Have your eyes checked on an eye exam to identify and correct for any hidden visual refractive errors, such as astigmatism, which could cause you to squint and strain your eyes even more.
  • Remember the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a break from your digital device by looking at an object about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Keep your computer monitor at an arm's distance away and at eye level.
  • Consider using a specialized screen, eyeglasses, or app to reduce or block blue light.
  • Reduce overhead glare, enlarge text, and adjust the contrast on your screen to help your eyes stay more comfortable.
